PUTRAJAYA: Many Malaysians are violating the tourist visa issued by the British Government and this is causing “stress and strain” in the relationship between the countries.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim said the number of violators was high and a cause of concern, adding that bilateral relations with Britain might be affected if the problem persisted.
“We have had good relations and understanding with Britain but this problem has become an issue. I hope to have a discussion on this with my counterpart, the British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, David Miliband on this issue soon.
“At the same time, we will have to do more to warn Malaysians against violating visa provisions, no matter which country they visit,” he told reporters after hosting a luncheon for Heads of Mission of South, Central and East Asia nations on Monday.
Asked on the number of Malaysians who had violated the British visa, Rais said he had yet to get the official figure, which could even be in “the thousands.”
